Celebrating Achievement
At Lakes Grammar, we believe achievement is multifaceted. It includes academic excellence, certainly, but it also encompasses growth in character, contribution to community, perseverance through challenge, and the pursuit of personal bests.
For many students, particularly in the younger years, external recognition can provide encouragement, build confidence, and reinforce positive habits. Certificates, awards, and public acknowledgment can affirm effort and signal that the school values dedication and improvement. However, we are also deeply committed to cultivating something more enduring for students: intrinsic motivation. Our ultimate goal is for students to value learning for its own sake, to take satisfaction in mastery, to embrace challenge willingly, and to develop pride in their own growth. Research consistently shows that intrinsic motivation leads to deeper learning, greater persistence, and long-term success.
A central part of this approach is our explicit focus on learning dispositions, the habits of mind and character that underpin achievement across every domain. Qualities such as curiosity, resilience, organisation, courage, collaboration and reflection are recognised and nurtured intentionally. When we celebrate these dispositions, we are celebrating the foundations of lifelong success, not simply the outcomes.
Equally important is our emphasis on personal bests. At Lakes, achievement is not measured solely in comparison to others. We encourage students to set meaningful goals, track their own progress, and take pride in improvement. Growth (whether large or incremental) is worthy of recognition. This ensures that every student can experience success, regardless of starting point.
