Learning
Welcome to Lakes Grammar, where we are excited to embark on a journey of learning and growth with your child from Kindergarten through to Year 12.
Guided, empowered, prepared
Our approach to learning is grounded in the belief that every student can grow, thrive and succeed when supported by high quality teaching, strong relationships and a clear sense of purpose. We combine explicit instruction with opportunities for inquiry, recognising that students learn best when they are both guided and challenged to think deeply, and when learning is shaped through meaningful connections with others.
Central to this is our Learning Powered Approach, which develops each student’s capacity for learning, focusing on both their capability and confidence. Based on the work of Guy Claxton, this approach emphasises the habits and dispositions that enable students to be effective, independent learners. Drawing on contemporary cognitive science, we prioritise resilience, resourcefulness and reflectiveness, alongside relational learning. Students learn to collaborate, communicate and learn with and from others. In this way, they are equipped not only with knowledge, but with the ability to apply it confidently in new and unfamiliar contexts.
Our approach is tailored to key developmental stages across the school. In the Junior School (K to 4), the focus is on strong foundations, curiosity and positive learning habits. In the Middle School (Years 5 to 8), students build independence, organisation and a deeper understanding of how they learn. In the Senior School (Years 9 to 12), the emphasis shifts to mastery, critical thinking and purposeful preparation for life beyond school.
Supported by our Academic Care program and informed use of data, we ensure each student is known, supported and challenged. Above all, Lakes Grammar fosters a culture where learning is engaging, purposeful and relational, preparing students to navigate a complex and changing world with confidence, character and integrity
