Learning Support
Lakes Grammar recognises and values the diverse learning styles within our student community. We are committed to making reasonable adjustments to support access to our educational programs in ways that are relevant and meaningful for each student.
Learning support at Lakes is provided within an inclusive model of education wherever possible. In the Junior School, some targeted support sessions are available to strengthen key literacy and numeracy skills. As students move into the middle and later years, we aim to minimise time away from regular classes so that students remain engaged with their peers and the wider curriculum. We aim to foster independence over time, encouraging students to develop the skills and confidence to thrive both in and beyond school.
Our Learning Support team provides a range of interventions tailored to individual needs wherever possible. A strong working relationship with families helps to ensure the benefits of different interventions are optimised. In some cases, external specialist services may be recommended to complement the support available at school.
For students with learning support:
- School approved specialist reports will be required, particularly as students move into the middle and senior curriculum areas to ensure fair and reasonable provisions are being provided. These reports will guide a determination of all reasonable learning support arrangements.
- Lakes participates in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) each year, and this will require annual consultation regarding the ongoing relevance of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Access arrangements, adjustments or special provisions for assessments may be possible for individual students, depending on specialist reports and relevant curriculum regulations.
Scope of support
Students with learning needs can access a range of supports, including classroom adjustments, targeted academic support programs, individual learning plans, high potential learning groups, streamed classes for middle and senior levels, assistive technology, special provisions for assessments and exams and guidance from our Learning Support team.
We work closely with parents and, where appropriate, external specialists to help each student experience success. Within our mainstream environment, highly intensive or specialised interventions are not always feasible; these are typically provided in specialist educational settings.
