Technology and BYOD

Technology and BYOD

At Lakes Grammar, technology is a powerful tool for learning, but it is never the driver. Our approach is thoughtful, age-appropriate, and grounded in the belief that digital fluency must develop alongside character, critical thinking, and wellbeing.

From Kindergarten to Year 4, students are introduced to school-based devices in carefully structured and limited ways. In these early years, technology is used to enhance creativity, collaboration and foundational skills, while ensuring that rich conversation, handwriting, play, and face-to-face learning remain central. During this time, we intentionally scaffold core digital skills and explicitly teach responsible digital citizenship. This includes online safety, respectful communication, and balanced technology habits.

As students mature, their independence grows. From Years 5–12, Lakes Grammar operates as a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school. Students are required to bring a device each day to support research, collaboration, organisation and the production of high-quality work. By this stage, students have been progressively prepared to manage their devices responsibly, understanding both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with digital access.

Throughout the school, our goal is not simply to ensure students can use technology, but that they can use it wisely (with discernment, creativity and integrity) as confident learners in an increasingly digital world.

Details on BYOD

For students in Years 5-12, the preferred BYOD device is a Windows Laptop or Apple MacBook. We request that iPads, Android devices or Chromebooks are not used. Most textbooks are available as eBooks for Years 7-12. This assists in making backpacks lighter. Teachers will ask students to use their device for a range of learning activities.

If your child does not already have a device or requires a new device, discounted options are available through our JB Hi-Fi BYOD portal. Login details are provided in the School Information Booklet (available for current parents within Schoolbox, or to new parents via our onboarding process).

Microsoft devices purchased via the portal can include extended warranty and Accidental Damage Protection (up to 3 years, up to 3 claims) added directly through Microsoft at checkout. This enterprise-level coverage is only available when buying through the portal.
